Freelancers, Happy New Year! With every new year comes new plans, resolutions, “New Year, New Me”. This is because we take a look back at the past year, at the things we have done, things we wished we did or didn’t get to do. We want to change our outcomes and set ourselves up for success. So as freelancers, web developers or whatever field you are in, let us take look at some of the resolutions we can look to making this year.

Work on projects you enjoy

You would think this is a no brainer but oftentimes, developers find themselves taking on jobs that they don’t enjoy. This could be due to various reasons from making extra money to increasing portfolio size or simply because we assume it is easy! I have been there before!

This year, try to start off by accepting projects, clients and jobs that hold true value for you as an individual, freelancer and a business owner. This allows you to concentrate on growth and development.

Get Paid on time, every time

Get in the habit of setting strict payment schedules upfront when dealing with a client. Do not spend all your productive time invoice and debt chasing. Make this a part of your contract and this will be a great way to ensure that you get paid on time, every time.

The freelance community is plagued with late payments as well as non payments which are the biggest disadvantages of freelancing. Resolve to fix it and take action this year.

Makeover

When was the last time you had time for yourself? What I mean by that is to check your portfolio. Make sure it shows your current best work. Set aside a good time to do this and while you are at it, don’t forget to update your CV/Resume too!

Resolve to give your website a makeover. Throughout the year, you have dedicated time to working on other projects but yours. Make sure your website best reflects your current skillsets, service offering and direction!

Say No More Often

The voice in my head is screaming at this! My friends will also scream and say I am guilty of this! But I am working on it and so should you.

The word “NO” is often akin to having a superpower. Only a few of us are able to wield this power. But remember, you don’t have to say YES to everything! Know when and how to say NO and communicate your decision strongly and respectfully without malice. If something will end up doing you more harm than good, don’t be afraid to walk away from it. And don’t feel guilty for doing so either.

So, in the spirit of saying NO; “I understand how urgent you need your website content updated. But we are not under any maintenance agreement at the moment. However, you can make a payment of GHc XXX, and I shall look at that for you immediately!”

Adjust Your Rates

I know you have been looking for this point and here it is! Yes! You should look to raising your rates. Throughout the years, you have undoubtedly learned new things, gotten significantly better at what you do and gained a lot of experience.

Do not just raise your rates, be considerate and practical in the process. Effectively communicate these adjustments to your clients as well. And be realistic. Not everyone will accept these adjustments. With the experience behind your back, be ready to justify the need for such.

Take Time For Yourself

You will need to keep track of work and time. Learn to manage your time and work efficiently and this will be incredibly beneficial to you. It will allow you enjoy the path which you have taken and the journey set before you.

The line between work and leisure is becoming increasingly blurred with remote work. There is a great misconception that self-employed also means “Always Available”. You need to schedule your work hours, time offs, family times, and vacation times. work-life balance reduces stress which is extremely dangerous to health and would turn your passion into a nightmare!

Conclusion

Resolve ultimately to do what is best for you while delivering your possible best for your clients. Say NO and don’t feel guilty and take time for yourself. Visit a friend. Go on a road trip. Visit the gym. Workout 3 to 4 times a week. And remember, life is too short not to prioritize yourself.

  1. I have been surfing online greater than 3 hours as of late, but
I by no means discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours.
It is pretty price enough for me. In my view, if
all webmasters and bloggers made excellent content
material as you did, the net might be much more
    useful than ever before.
